When Gunner got his first haircut I searched high and low for the perfect hair salon. I called and booked an appointment 3 weeks out. We flew him across the country and got his hair cut in a cute kids hair salon in California. I took probably 60 pictures of the event since it was SO monumental. He even got his beautiful locks taped to a gorgeous 'My 1st haircut' certificate.
Things weren't quite so exciting for my Sweet Karlee girl who got her first haircut in our kitchen while our friends were visiting.
I really hadn't even planned on cutting it until it was MUCH longer (like down to her butt!), but the poor girl always gets so upset whenever I cut her Daddy and Gunner's hair and she is just made to sit and watch, that this time I didn't have the energy to listen to a temper tantrum. When she first said she wanted her haircut I told her no, but as I really thought about it I decided life was too short to wait until her hair was longer and I figured what would it really hurt? Treva was told that it actually stimulates hair growth, so we went for it!
The entire time I thought Karlee would chicken out. When I first caved in and offered to cut it I thought she would say no....she didn't. When I first stuck her up on her Daddy's lap I thought she would want down...she didn't. When I put the cape on her I thought she would scream...she didn't. When I sprayed her hair with cold water and combed through it I thought she would tell me to stop...she didn't. When I told her to hold really still so I could make my first cut I thought she would move, giving me a good excuse to NOT cut her hair...she didn't. She smiled the whole time and held as still as I could have expected for a 2 year old. When she was done she jumped down, looked up and me and said, "I pretty?" and then ran to the bathroom to check out her new-do in the mirror.
Instead of Karlee getting a gorgeous little certificate that says 'My 1st haircut' she instead got a simple white index card that has some of her hair taped to it with my handwriting saying 'Karlee's 1st haircut' and the date. Not as exciting as Gunner's but I promise it was done with just as much love! I have told her that when we're in California I'll take her to get a real haircut...problem is the poor girl doesn't have much hair...hopefully it grows quite a bit in the next couple of weeks! If not we can just get a shampoo :)
My baby girl is officially growing up. What a bittersweet moment.
<--Getting ready to begin (See? She is SO happy!)
The FIRST cut!

She is growing up so fast! Take it from me, it is better to some times let them have a say in things like hair cuts. Our Hanna had been pleading with her father for weeks to let her get her hair cut and he really hated to cut her beautiful silky long hair. So on Mothers day she had gotten her little hands on a pair of the kids craft scissors and cut her hair off all the way to her little scalp in some areas and in a matter of a few minutes. I can't help but to wonder if we had just given in to a trim or a little bit of a cut then maybe we wouldn't have lost so much of her beautiful hair. It was shocking and took some time to get over. We have since hidden all scissors and when one of our kids pleads for a new hair style or cut we take them seriously. Lucky for Daddy his little girls now can't wait for their hair to grow long. I think Karlee looks beautiful. Good job Mom!
ReplyDeletehow sweet is that, she is sitting so still...having just read Carolyn's comment, I can't imagine what that must have been like. You hear about it happening, but raising two boys that was never a threat!! Guess maybe it is good Karlee got her wish. I am so proud of her.
